It’s been a long time comin’… Like his longtime bandmate, Rick Nielsen, Cheap Trick bassist/songwriter Tom Petersson collects classic stringed instruments. Now a resident of Nashville, Petersson still plays the 12-string electric bass he is credited for envisioning and developing in the late 1970s in conjunction with the original Hamer company. Known for his high-octane 12-string bass playing, Tom Petersson is the man responsible for the riffs lurking in the bedrock of Cheap Trick’s sound. His galvanic playing laid down a foundation for the band’s emergence as a musical monster in the 1970s, helping them win a fanatical following that’s grown to include luminaries like Gene Simmons, Joey Ramone and Poison’s C.C. DeVille. I’m Tom Petersson, bass player for the group Cheap Trick. I’m here in London, England at Sixty Sixty Sounds, Denmark Street. I came with our guitar player Rick Nielsen, he and I came to London in 1968.

Jol Dantzig of Hamer Guitars was the actual builder of the first 12-string bass. It was Petersson's idea to expand the 8-string bass concept by adding one more additional octave string to each bass string.
